Another potential safety hazard is the installation of the wrong size insert. Too big for the size of area being heated and the owner may try to adjust the heat by burning the fire too low, creating the buildup of creosote in the chimney.

I recently installed a wood stove and wrote about the experience here, I talk about the issues mentioned above. If you are thinking about getting one, go for it - you won't be sorry.

I had trouble when I replaced the gasket that goes around the window of the woodstove. I figured out that there is a special gasket with a peel strip and stickum. It wraps around both sides of the window so it seals really well and protects the window when you install it.

I found the gasket at Fargo Paint and Glass, so you may have to go to a similar store in your area. None of the big box stores had it, but it sure makes window gasket replacement easier.

I grew up with a wood stove but didn't really appreciate it until adulthood. The one draw back is how unevenly they heat. My dad has always used a fan in pipe but I want to take heat distribution further. I think the heat going up the chimney should be the bare minimum which would allow the smoke to rise instead of back up. When I used to melt snow onthe stove top and pipe and it would sizzle and boil away, that tells me a lot of heat is wasted. I would like to see heat sinks on the outside of the combustion box as well as a snaked or coiled copper pipe. The pipe would be connected to a heat radiator away from the stove and water would be pumped, heated on the stove cooled and the recycled again.
